The Reivers is a picaresque about three improbable automobile thieves from rural Mississippi, and it is one of Faulkner s humorous classics. Boon Hogganbeck, one of his family s retainers, persuades eleven-year-old Lucius Priest to take his grandfather s automobile and go to Memphis. Ned McCaslin, the Priests black coachman, stows away, and the three of them embark on a heroic quest for which they are entirely unprepared, culminating at Miss Reba s bordello in Memphis. A series of bizarre events occurs, involving horse smugglers, trainmen, sheriff s deputies, and incarceration.
